Ms. Cain's history with acupuncture started over 30 years ago through her father, Dr. Marvin Cain, world renowned veterinarian. Dr. Marvin Cain was encouraged by a friend in the early 1970's to explore acupuncture. Acupuncture was unknown in North America at that time, but with a great deal of healthy skepticism, Dr. Cain attended a seminar being given by visiting Chinese doctors. His intent was to prove to his friend that acupuncture didn't work. Much to his surprise, he could not debunk it - acupuncture was highly effective! Having learned acupuncture's value, Dr. Cain traveled to the Orient and studied human acupuncture with the Masters there. Dr. Cain then brought it back to the U.S., pioneered veterinary acupuncture, co-founded the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS) and started the teaching course that veterinarians take to this day to be certified in acupuncture. In these "early days," the building of IVAS was a family effort, and Dr. Cain's daughter, Ms. Cain, ended up sitting through many of the acupuncture courses that were being taught. Because she was not a veterinarian and there were no laws governing the use of acupuncture on human patients at the time, she was not able to use what she had learned. Once the acupuncture laws were passed in Ohio in 2000, Ms. Cain followed through on a National Board Certification in acupuncture, bringing the benefits of this time-tested therapy to her human patients.
